Emergency at JDS Uniphase in San Jose, CA

Friday, March 3, 2006

The San Jose, California fire department and Hazardous Materials crews today responded to a chemical emergency at a JDS Uniphase manufacturing facility. The incident, at 80 Rose Orchard Drive, off North First St., sent between 15 and 17 people, including two firefighters, to the hospital with symptoms and for observation.

Those exposed to the hazard reported a smell of “burnt rubber”, along with symptoms of eye and throat irritation.

Over 48 others were held in a nearby building while the incident was assessed. Rose Orchard Way was closed for much of the day while emergency crews responded. Estimates put the incident at about 10 a.m. (1800 UTC).

As of 6 p.m. television news reports, authorities still had not determined the source or nature of the chemical, but said neighboring buildings were not in danger.

JDS Uniphase manufactures fiber optic communications and test equipment, and was formed from a merger of JDS FITEL and Uniphase Corporation in 1999.

Question: 1

Click the Exhibit button.

Given the information shown in the exhibit, what was used to determine mastership?

A. member uptime

B. manuallyassigned role

C. highest serial numbe

D. manually assigned priority

Answer: A

Explanation:

When a Virtual Chassis configuration boots, the Juniper Networks Junos operating system (Junos OS) on the switches automatically runs a master election algorithm to determine which member switch assumes the role of master.

The algorithm proceeds from the top condition downward until the stated condition is satisfied:

Question: 2

Which two statements are true about OSPF not-so-stubby areas? (Choose two.)

A. The ASBR originates Type 7 LSAafor redistributed external routes.

B. Type 5 LSAs are translated by the ASBR into Type 7 LSAs.

C. The ASBR originates Type 5 LSAs for redistributed external routes.

D. Type 7 LSAs are translated by the ABR into Type 5 LSAs.

Answer: A,D

Explanation:

Redistribution intoan NSSA area creates a special type of link-state advertisement (LSA) known as type 7, which can only exist in an NSSA area. An NSSA autonomous system boundary router (ASBR) generates this LSA and an NSSA area border router (ABR) translates it into a type5 LSA, which gets propagated into the OSPF domain.

Question: 3

Click the Exhibit button.

Referring to the exhibit, which statement is true?

A. R3 has the complete OSPF database.

B. R3 and R4 have an adjacency state ofFull.

C. R4 is elected as the DR.

D. R1 and R2 are elected as DROTHERs.

Answer: A,C

Explanation:

C: In LANs, the election of the designated router takes place when the OSPF network is initially established. When the first OSPF links are active, the routing device with the highest router identifier (defined by the router-id configuration value, which is typically the IP address of the routing device, or the loopback address) is elected the designated router.

Question: 4

An EBGP session sources its TCP connection from which IP address?

A. The IP address of the primary address assigned to the loopback interface.

B. The IP address assigned as the router ID.

C. The IP address of the preferred address assigned to the loopback interface.

D. The IP address of the interface that connects the two BGP speakers.

Answer: D

Explanation:

The BGP session between two BGP peers is said to be an external BGP (eBGP) session if the BGP peers are in different autonomous systems (AS) . A BGP session between two BGP peers is said to be an internal BGP (iBGP) session if the BGP peers are in the same autonomous systems.

By default, the peer relationship is established using the IP address of the interface closest to the peer router.

Question: 5

You notice that there are currently two MAC addresses associated with a single access port in the bridge table on one of your EX Series switches.

What are two explanations for this behavior? (Choose two.)

A. The access port connects to an IP phone which connects to a host device.

B. The native VLAN feature has been associatedwith the access port.

C. Themac-move-limitfeature has been disabled on the access port.

D. The access port connects to multiple hosts through a rogue device.

Answer: B,D

Explanation:

MAC move limiting detects MAC movement and MAC spoofing on access interfaces. You enable this feature on VLANs.

International exhibit of chair art starts in Canada

Monday, November 21, 2005

The international entry mail art show SAT: An Exhibit of Chairs was put on display Friday in Brampton, Ontario, Canada. Held in the Fridge Front Gallery at the Shoppers World Brampton mall, SAT is a diverse collection of artworks focusing on a generally mundane object, the chair.

Works in the show range from realism to abstract, dadaism to surrealism, post-modern to collage.

While some of the entries were submitted directly to Visual Arts Brampton, most came from a previous exhibit. Organized by Pati Bristow, No place to rest, chairs you can’t sit on ran at Shopping Trolley Gallery West and Seaman’s Library at Foothill College, both in Los Altos Hills, California, earlier in 2005. Guest curator Nicholas Moreau was unaware of the similarly themed exhibit, held so soon before. The theme for SAT was based on that of a 1987 juried art show organized by Visual Arts Brampton at the now-defunct Chinguacousy Library Gallery.

Works in Visual Arts Brampton’s showing of the exhibition are from 17 countries including Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Norway, Pakistan, Romania, Spain, Uruguay, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America.

This is Visual Arts Brampton’s third mail art show. In 1999, Susan Williamson created The Great Canadian Mail Art Show for Artway at Bramalea City Centre; the show was so successful that the Art Gallery of Peel adopted it in 2001. The concept of a mail art show was revived in 2004 by Moreau, held at the new Artway Shoppers World. The Snail Mail World Postcard Art Show has been held annually since.

Visual Arts Brampton’s Fridge Front Gallery primarily hosts artwork by youth from its kids classes, and from schools in Brampton and Oakville. In contrast, the nearby Artway Gallery hosts artwork by professional and amateur adult artists from across Peel. VAB has successfully sought permission to create a third display space in Shoppers World, in the Zellers corridor. The space will host shows of mail art and works on paper year-round. The planned “World Art Gallery” will be the first ever permanent display space for mail art.

Former Illinois Governor Blagojevich rests in corruption trial

Thursday, July 22, 2010

Despite promises he would testify in his own corruption trial, lawyers for former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich rested their case yesterday morning. His defense did not call a single witness, and apparently feels the prosecution has not proven their case. Closing arguments are scheduled for Monday.

Speculation that Blagojevich would not testify began on Tuesday, when U.S. District Judge James Zagel adjourned 90 minutes early after a private meeting with the lawyers involved. Robert Blagojevich, the former governor’s brother and co-defendant in the case, had already testified on his own behalf. Blagojevich’s defense team apparently considered resting their case on Tuesday, but Zagel gave them an extra day to consider their decision more carefully.

When Zagel directly asked the former governor about his decision, he replied that he understood what he was doing. “It is my decision, under the advice of my attorneys. I make the decision fully and voluntarily,” he said.

Blagojevich is charged with trying to sell the U.S. Senate seat that had been vacated by Barack Obama when he won the 2008 presidential election, among other crimes. Robert Blagojevich testified that his brother was trying to manipulate the political situation to his advantage, but emphasized that he engaged in nothing illegal. According to some sources, Blagojevich was interested in leading the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Blair launches third and final manifesto

Wednesday, April 13, 2005

Tony Blair today launched the Labour Party’s 112 page manifesto for a third term, entitled “Britain: Forward not back”, at London’s Mermaid Theatre this afternoon, promising not to increase income tax or VAT.

Blair, with Chancellor Gordon Brown, described the manifesto, which focused on economic policy, as “radical”, “quintessentially New Labour” and giving people the “chance to succeed and make the most of what they have”.

As well as economic promises, the manifesto pledged better social housing, increased funding and reform of education and the National Health Service and the introduction of community police patrols. The manifesto does not promise a freeze on National Insurance, the income-linked tax which funds the NHS and pensions.

Conservative leader Michael Howard said that the British people had “heard it all before”, and reiterated claims that Labour would have to increase taxes significantly in the third term.

Deputy leader of the Liberal Democrats, Sir Menzies Campbell, whose party was the only mainstream party consistently against the Iraq war, said Labour would “not be judged by their promises, but by what they have done”, adding that Labour have not kept their previous promises.

The Conservative Party and Green Party launched their manifestos yesterday, and the Liberal Democrats launch theirs tomorrow.

The Secret Behind Dog Food

How To Find The Right Food For Your Dog

Best food for dogs is not an easy task to find. In fact, it can be quite difficult. It can take a long time to find the ideal food for your dog, because there are so many different types of food available to us today.

The most important thing to do when you are looking for dog food is to do your research. There is a lot of information available on the internet, but in order to find the right food, it is important to find the right sources.

I know, this may sound like a tall order, but it is actually pretty simple if you know where to look. You can try to find the right information by asking your local vet, but most vets won’t have much to say. Instead, you should rely on the internet for more information.

One source that is very easy to find online is the Pet Store Locator. It is an online directory that lists all of the pet stores that are in your area. Every pet store listed will have their own website, which you can use to search for a food that you want. There are a lot of reviews and ratings that can be found for different foods on the website.

This way, you can find out about the food before you buy it. Most of the reviews will be positive, but you should also keep in mind that some reviews will be completely biased. If you can’t find a review on the website itself, then just check out the information on the site itself.

Another way to find out about a pet store that you are considering is to ask the owner themselves. Ask them about the food they sell, whether or not they offer any discounts, how long they have been around, and what kind of customer service they give to their customers.

They may even have previous customers who can give you a good indication of whether or not the food is good or not. Once you have found the right food store, you can get to work and begin looking for the best food for your dog.

Remember, there are a number of things to look for in dog food, and you will need to read reviews and articles to get a feel for which food you think will suit your dog best. Don’t forget to include supplements and vitamins in your dog food too.

Sometimes your dog will need a little extra boost of energy, and other times they need just the right amount of calcium, for instance.

It can be easy to just choose the cheapest food out there, but if you don’t take care of your pet properly, your pet could become ill or even die. So it’s really important to feed them with the best food for dogs.

The Secret Behind Dog Food

Dog food has to be specially formulated and prepared for consumption by other dogs and their pet counterparts. Dogs are commonly classified as carnivores or omnivores with an omnivorous (meat-eating) bias. Some are also referred to as herbivores. Since dogs can survive on both meat and plants, dog food must be able to meet both needs of the animal in question.

The two types of diets you can feed your dog are those that are homemade or canned and those which you prepare for your dog in advance and keep ready at all times. If you have your own home, you can create your dog’s diet on your own from scratch using fresh ingredients.

You can also have your veterinarian prepare your dog’s diet for you based on his recommendations. In either case, however, the basic components of the dog food you use are meat, vegetables, grains, and water.

Meat and bones are the most common elements in a well-balanced diet for dogs. If the dog you are feeding has a meat-based diet, then you should make sure that you are adding in fresh meat to the diet as it contains amino acids that dogs need to grow and develop healthy skin and bones.

Other elements that help your dog to grow healthily are the inclusion of protein-rich foods such as meat, eggs, liver, fish, beans, vegetables, and grains.

Liver is also a good source of amino acids that are essential for dogs. This ingredient helps build bone strength and maintain muscle tissue. Protein-rich grains such as oats, rice, and barley are also good sources of protein for dogs. Whole grain breads and cereals are also recommended as they contain the proper amount of proteins that dogs need to build strong bones and muscles.

The addition of natural vitamins and minerals is also beneficial for dogs. Vitamins A, C, E, and K are a few of the natural vitamins and minerals that dog need to grow healthily and stay healthy.

If you do not have access to these elements in your local area, then you can include supplements such as flax seeds, algae, and brewer’s yeast in your dog’s food. These ingredients are easily available and are generally recognized as high in nutrient content.

It is very important that you give your dog fresh meat and bones in sufficient quantities. Otherwise, it could lead to severe dehydration and even death. Your dog’s metabolism requires food to be digested quickly for it to grow and sustain its physical and mental growth.

If your dog is not getting enough nutrients, he/she will eventually become ill or die.

Gastric bypass surgery performed by remote control

Sunday, August 21, 2005

A robotic system at Stanford Medical Center was used to perform a laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery successfully with a theoretically similar rate of complications to that seen in standard operations. However, as there were only 10 people in the experimental group (and another 10 in the control group), this is not a statistically significant sample.

If this surgical procedure is as successful in large-scale studies, it may lead the way for the use of robotic surgery in even more delicate procedures, such as heart surgery. Note that this is not a fully automated system, as a human doctor controls the operation via remote control. Laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery is a treatment for obesity.

There were concerns that doctors, in the future, might only be trained in the remote control procedure. Ronald G. Latimer, M.D., of Santa Barbara, CA, warned “The fact that surgeons may have to open the patient or might actually need to revert to standard laparoscopic techniques demands that this basic training be a requirement before a robot is purchased. Robots do malfunction, so a backup system is imperative. We should not be seduced to buy this instrument to train surgeons if they are not able to do the primary operations themselves.”

There are precedents for just such a problem occurring. A previous “new technology”, the electrocardiogram (ECG), has lead to a lack of basic education on the older technology, the stethoscope. As a result, many heart conditions now go undiagnosed, especially in children and others who rarely undergo an ECG procedure.

What Is A Small Business?

By Chris Johansen

Are you tired of feeling like you work harder and harder and get no benefit from it? Perhaps you feel like you have a great business idea to fill a real need in your community. If so, you may want to consider branching out on your own and starting an entrepreneurship of your very own. Before you start, however, you may want to get as many facts as you can. What better way to start is there by asking exactly what is a small business?

There are some basic criteria involved when defining this term. A small business is often defined as a business that is privately held and run. It normally has a lesser number of workers and does a low amount of total sales. This type of business is usually a sole proprietorship or corporation.

The lawful meaning of the term small does vary from country to country and can be based on several factors. A business of this type can be classified strictly by the quantity of personnel that company maintains. Even this can differ from place to place, with some countries defining it with as little as fifteen workers while others classify it as anything under five hundred.

Sometimes the definitions can vary within the same country. In Canada it can be seen as this type based on the number of workers or based on the annual revenue. It all seems to depend on which organization you ask.

One organization states that a small business is defined by the amount of revenue they generate. In their view, a business that has revenue between thirty thousand dollars and five million dollars is considered small. Other people may differ with this opinion.

Another firm has a completely different take on the subject. They define the term as a business that has less than five hundred employees and generates less than fifty million dollars in revenue. This may seem like a very broad spectrum when trying to pinpoint a description.

A third definition also can be found among Canadian groups. There is another approach that believes the phrase is described by the number of employees. Here, a small business would be defined as an operation that has fewer than fifty workers in its fold.

So what is a small business? It seems that the definition itself is somewhat broad, but there are some basic facts that are maintained within. It is a privately run organization with a small number of employees. In any case, when looking to start this type of company yourself, it will take a lot of effort and hard work to get things up, running and profitable. Some people may have difficulty handling all the responsibilities that come along with operating a small business. Companies can assist you with items like payroll, taxes, accounting and general consulting. There are many services available that can offer you professional advice and help to keep things running smoothly for you.

Erica Powell, Nkrumah’s private secretary dies

Monday, July 16, 2007

Erica Powell OBE, who was the Private Secretary to Kwame Nkrumah, President of Ghana and later to Siaka Stevens, President of Sierra Leone, died last month at the age of 86. She died at Peterborough on June 5, 2007. She was made an MBE in 1958 and OBE in 1960.

Erica was born on March 15, 1921 at Brighton in Sussex England into a middle class family. She trained as a secretary and then as a teacher. She worked with Barclays Bank during World War II. She was the top candidate in the 1940 London Chamber of Commerce Shorthand and Typewriting exams.

In February 1952, the Crown Agents for the Colonies offered her the position of “Private Secretary (Female)/Gold Coast” which later became the title of her autobiography. She ended up working as the Private Secretary to the Governor of the Gold Coast, Sir Charles Arden-Clarke. While working for the Governor, she became a close friend and confidant of Kwame Nkrumah, then bidding for Ghana’s independence from the United Kingdom. Her closeness to Nkrumah led to her being dismissed in 1954 and being sent back to the UK.

Powell returned in January 1955 to work for Kwame Nkrumah, a position she held till 1965, a year before his overthrow. Her close relationship and loyalty to Nkrumah bred a lot of rumours both in Ghana and the UK. It also brought a lot of resentment from various quarters. She kept in contact with Nkrumah while he was in exile in Guinea until his death in April, 1972.

She later worked for Siaka Stevens as his private secretary from 1970 to 1979. She attended Nkrumah’s funeral in 1972 as part of the official Sierra Leone delegation.
