Australia: Wikinews interviews Rebecca Jennings, independent candidate for Daly by-election

Friday, September 10, 2021

In the Northern Territory of Australia (NT), voters in the electoral division of Daly are scheduled to vote for a new Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) tomorrow. The previous Member, Ian Sloan of the Country Liberal Party (CLP), resigned in August. Daly covers communities near Darwin, as well as more remote places such as Timber Creek and Wadeye.

Via email, Wikinews interviewed Rebecca Jennings, who is standing in the Daly by-election as an independent candidate. Jennings previously contested the 2020 Northern Territory general election as a candidate for the Territory Alliance party. She ran in the Fannie Bay, and received 242 votes (5.6% of the vote).

Study: Fish reduces Alzheimer’s disease risk

Wednesday, November 30, 2011

Consumption of grilled or baked fish at least once a week can preserve the brain structure of seniors and reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease by three to five times, according to the results of a recent US study.

The study, conducted by the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in Pennsylvania, asked 260 volunteers with an average age of 76, about the frequency of their fish consumption. Ten years later, brain scans were carried out on those being researched. Those who regularly ate fish were found to have better preservation of parts of the brain related to memory. An additional five years later, 31% of those who did not regularly consume fish contracted mild cognitive impairment or Alzheimer’s disease. Of those who ate fish at least once a week, between three and eight per cent contracted the aforementioned medical conditions.

According to The Daily Telegraph, consumption of grilled or baked fish increases the intake of Omega 3 fatty acids, providing a greater amount of blood flow to the brain; therefore prompting a reduction in inflammation and internal gathering of plaque encountered in the lead-up to Alzheimer’s disease. Fried fish does not reduce the risk of contracting Alzheimer’s disease due to the low amount of Omega 3 it contains.

Dr. Cyrus Raji, who took leadership of the study, called it “the first study to establish a direct relationship between fish consumption, brain structure and Alzheimer’s risk.” Raji concluded that “people who consumed baked or [grilled] fish at least one time per week had better preservation of grey matter volume on MRI in brain areas at risk for Alzheimer’s disease.”

The Alzheimer’s Society’s research manager, Dr. Anne Corbett, stated: “This moderately sized study adds weight to existing evidence suggesting that eating fish reduces your risk of developing cognitive decline.” However, she contested these findings, saying they “did not account for lifestyle factors such as other foods or exercise”, which may have affected the overall outcome. Dr. Corbett advised consumers to “eat a healthy diet including fruit and vegetables along with taking regular exercise and giving up smoking” to reduce the risk of contracting dementia.

Meanwhile, Alzheimer’s Research UK lead researcher, Dr. Simon Ridley, believed the study had not clarified “whether other underlying factors may have contributed to the lower risk in people who eat fish.” There is “a clear need for more conclusive research into the effects of dietary fish on our cognitive health,” according to Dr. Ridley.

The results of the study are to be presented today at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America.

Supporters of Myanmar’s Suu Kyi mark detained leader’s 62nd birthday

Tuesday, June 19, 2007

Aung San Suu Kyi, the detained leader of the National League for Democracy in Myanmar marked her 62nd birthday today, still under house arrest, where she has spent most of the past 17 years.

About 250 supporters met at the National League for Democracy (NLD) headquarters in Yangon, not far from Suu Kyi’s home, and held a rally calling for her release. Doves and balloons were released into the air, under the watchful eyes and video cameras of around 50 plainclothes police officers, who were stationed across the street.

The police force was augmented by a dozen truckloads of members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association, the political arm of the State Peace and Development, the junta that rules Myanmar.

“The doves symbolise peace. We also released colourful balloons, which rise like her prestige when they fill the sky,” NLD women’s wing leader Lai Lai was quoted as saying by Agence France Presse.

With the party marking marking Suu Kyi’s birthday as “Myanmar Women’s Day,” Lei Lei read out a statement at the ceremony, calling Suu Kyi “irreplaceable” and praising her “honesty, bravery and perseverance.”

Security was beefed up around Suu Kyi’s lakeside home on University Avenue, which is usually open to traffic during daytime, but is closed on significant anniversaries such as Suu Kyi’s birthday or the May 30 anniversary of her detention.

NLD supporters said police were also watching their homes.

“Plainclothes police circled around my house on their motorcycles last night until dawn,” Su Su Nway, 34, was quoted as saying by Agence France-Presse. She was arrested on May 15 with 60 others during a prayer rally for Suu Kyi in Yangon, and was released for health reasons on June 7. She said around 52 NLD supporters were still in custody.

Suu Kyi is generally barred from receiving visitors, so she spent the day alone. Except for her maid, a personal physician, a dentist and an eye specialist, the only other person to visit with Suu Kyi in the past year was United Nations Undersecretary-General for Political Affairs Ibrahim Gambari, whom she met for one hour last November at a government guest house.

Winner of the 1991 Nobel Peace Prize, Suu Kyi has been under house arrest for 11 of the past 17 years, continuously since 2003. Her National League for Democracy won a landslide election in 1990, but the military, which has ruled Myanmar since 1962, refused to honor the results. The country is also known as Burma, but the military government renamed it Myanmar in 1989.

Calls for Suu Kyi’s release have been issued by the NLD, various world bodies and other countries, but the pleadings have been met by no response from the generals.

“In our view, until their constitution is ratified, she will not be released,” Sann Aung, a Bangkok-based leader of the Burmese government-in-exile was quoted as saying by Reuters.

“They are worried that she will be a threat to the National Convention and the referendum,” he told Reuters, referring to the planned national referendum on a new constitution that is being written by the generals.

The Nation newspaper in Bangkok marked Suu Kyi’s birthday with an editorial, saying that sanctions against the Myanmar regime have been ineffective.

“The junta has earned huge amounts of foreign revenue from oil and gas exports, with prices jacked up many times over. With rich mineral resources, energy hungry countries have been attracted to Burma despite the repressive nature of the junta,” the editorial said, also making note of a recent deal that Russia has made to build nuclear reactor in Myanmar.

The paper also said Myanmar bodes ill for the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations regional grouping.

“As long as Aung San Suu Kyi remains incarcerated, ASEAN’s reputation and the group’s international standing will be tarnished. Asean leaders have repeatedly appealed to the Burmese junta to free her, but to no avail … today, Burma is the black sheep of ASEAN. Without any current provisions for sanctions, Burma will remain as intransigent in the future as it is today.”

Eric Allen, The Truth About Taking Mlm Mainstream And To Record Status}

Submitted by: Eric H Allen

Eric Allen is not your typical or traditional MLM top earner, and he is quite proud of this distinction. He has always been one to create his own path in life, centered around his passions and interests. Whether it is working with at-risk youth, coaching the game of basketball, or spending quality time with his family, he had never been one to chase the Almighty Dollar. Although Eric originally pursued a traditional college education in business, and graduated from a top-ranked business school in the U.S., he realized that his life would be more aligned with his values and greater purpose by becoming an inner city high school teacher and basketball coach. After seven years in the teaching profession, Eric received the opportunity to pursue another lifetime goal in getting the opportunity to coach Division One Basketball full time – even though it was a significant pay cut from an already very meager high school teaching and coaching salary. Although he is very proud of the accomplishments he achieved in during this journey in his life, including winning numerous state and national teaching honors, authoring a best-selling book, achieving various coaching recognitions, and, most importantly, making true impacts on the lives of his students and players, he also came to the disturbing realization that his current journey in life as a teacher and basketball coach, although intrinsically fulfilling and rewarding, was never going to allow him to realize the lifestyle or philanthropic goals he had for his family and greater future.

As Eric reflected and prepared himself for a major life shift – even though he was seemingly unaware of what that might entail – the world of network marketing presented itself. Eric, like many, had to break down his false predispositions toward multi level marketing, but decided that this profession offered the most legitimate means to begin to develop a “Plan B” that would ultimately get him to where he wanted to be financially – and he embarked on this pursuit while enduring a very hectic and grueling college basketball coaching workload. These often included 90+ hour work weeks, on campus, in practice, scouting, road trips, tutoring, and a host of other duties and responsibilities.

Eric Allen credits Brian Tracy and other top experts – who he actually chose to go into business with in his primary and only business opportunity – as the reason for his internal foundation for success, and meteoric rise to prosperity in network marketing. Believe it or not, Eric makes more on one month now than he used to make in over TWO YEARS on a teaching salary, and THREE YEARS on a coaching salary! More importantly, he is able to spend quality time with his family and be in a more powerful position to implement concrete changes and programs to benefit the lives of at-risk and disadvantaged youth.

Today, Eric Allen is leading the charge in cultivating a more mainstream and well-respected outlook on the network marketing industry. It is Eric’s conviction that as more and more genuine, success-oriented individuals from all walks of life experience the freedoms uniquely available in network marketing, the industry as a whole will serve to benefit and empower the lives of exponentially more like-minded individuals globally.

Eric’s current overarching mission is to rapidly and ethically legitimize and enhance the image of the industry by embodying and promoting a culture of professionalism, integrity, and true entrepreneuralism. Eric and his wife Casey now live an amazingly abundant lifestyle and are able to give back philanthropically to several causes they are passionate about – all because of their refreshingly straight-up, laid back, and “non-cheesy” approach to network marketing success. Eric is confident in his ability to transform and empower the life of any genuine, ambitious, and coachable person through the wonderful platform of network marketing!

About the Author: Eric Allen is continuing to inspire and galvanize thousands and thousands of like-minded, genuine professionals, both new to the industry and experienced veterans, because of his refreshing approach to prosperity in MLM. His rapid results speak for themselves, and prove that you do not have to be a “cheeseball” to experience all of the intrinsic and extrinsic rewards in the network marketing profession. World AIDS Day events held around the globe

Sunday, December 2, 2007

The 20th annual World AIDS Day was December 1, 2007. The theme selected by the World AIDS Campaign is “Stop AIDS: Keep the Promise” as it will be through 2010. The day was marked by thousands of events around the world.

“It is now time for bold leadership at all levels in order to turn the tide of HIV,” said Felicita Hikuam, Global Programmes Manager, World AIDS Campaign. An estimated 33.2 million people around the world—one in every 200—are living with HIV, and approximately 6,800 people are infected with HIV and 5,700 people die of AIDS-related illnesses every day.

“The trend is encouraging but still for every person receiving treatment four others are newly infected,” said Nelson Mandela, speaking at a concert in Johannesburg, South Africa. “If we are to stop the Aids epidemic from expanding, we need to break the cycle of new HIV infections. All of us working together with government, communities and civil society can make the difference that is needed,” he continued.

As many as 50,000 people attended the concert in Johannesburg, South Africa, which was telecast around the world. It was organized by Nelson Mandela’s 46664 AIDS campaign and featured performances by artists such as Peter Gabriel, Ludacris, Razorlight, the Goo Goo Dolls and Annie Lennox.File:20050702-Nelson Mandela Live8 Edinburgh.jpg

At a fundraiser in the town of Midrand, in the province Gauteng, near Johannesburg on Friday, singer Annie Lennox had strong words for the South African government’s AIDS policies.

“AIDS, as Madiba [Mandela] has said, is a human rights issue and should be treated as such in order to avoid this genocide that is affecting millions and millions of people around the world,” said Lennox in a speech. Lennox has previously been critical of the South African government’s position on suggesting some AIDS medications were toxic. “It is unacceptable that treatment has not been made available to those who need it most,” said Lennox.

The rock band Queen, which lost its lead singer Freddie Mercury to AIDS, released a new song entitled, Say It’s Not True, to coincide with World Aids Day. It has been made available as a free download from the band’s website. “By making the song available for free, we hope to help Nelson Mandela with his campaign to get across the message that no-one is safe from infection,” said Queen drummer Roger Taylor. “We have to be aware, we have to protect ourselves and those we love.”

In China, people distributed AIDS prevention brochures in the streets and promoted safe sex in cities like Beijing and Shanghai. In Changsha, official warning signs were put on hotel bedstands. The government announced on Friday an allocation of CNY860 million for AIDS prevention and control. According to official reports, there are estimated to be 700,000 people living with HIV/AIDS in China.

Also in China, the Miss World 2007 was in Sanya on World AIDS Day. The pageant presented a special tribute to the fight against AIDS, with a televised speech from former South African President Nelson Mandela, along with traditional dancers from South Africa who joined the contestants in a special song.

Friday, United States President George W. Bush urged the United States Congress to double the 2003 Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief to US$30 billion over the next five years. “Above all, we rededicate ourselves to a great purpose: We will turn the tide against HIV/AIDS—once and for all,” he said.

“I’m pleased to announce that Laura and I will travel to sub-Sahara Africa early next year,” Bush said. Sub-Saharan Africa suffered nearly three-quarters of AIDS-related deaths during 2006 and is home to two-thirds of those living with HIV/AIDS.

Australian House of Representatives acknowledges Cyclone Larry efforts

Wednesday, March 29, 2006The Australian House of Representatives today acknowledged the impact of the recent devastating Cyclone Larry and the efforts of the support given to the residents and communities of north Queensland in order to restore normal life.

Phillip Ruddock (Liberal, Berowra) moved a motion expressing this after Question Time today, which included a description of the devastation wrought on the area, the response by the Australian Government and the Australian Defence Force, and thanked the efforts of people for their “willingness to roll up their sleeves and get on with the job of cleaning up and rebuilding their towns and centres.”

The Leader of the Opposition, Kim Beazley (Labor, Brand) supported the motion, and congratulated the move to put General Peter Cosgrove in charge of operations, stating that soldiers “know how to work through logistics issues…how to work around officialdom or blockages”, praised both local federal and state members of Parliament, and especially the Labor Queensland state premier, Peter Beattie.

Bob Katter (Independent, Kennedy) was more critical in his speech. Katter thanked Beattie for his immediate response, but also described his confrontation with him and said how first responses were “simply not working”, but also praised Beattie’s decision on Cosgrove. Katter also described how the incident was “the worst natural disaster inAustralian history” and how the banana industry in north Queensland was decimated. Katter went on to describe the financial problems of the people in the region, the “huge gap” between the cost of rebuilding and insurance payouts, also asking “Are we going to pay people virtually nothing to sit on their backsides to do nothing or are we going to pay them a decent wage and have them rebuilding our communities for us?”

The debate is set to continue in the Main Committee, as an opportunity for many more members of the House of Representatives to speak to the motion, without taking up further time in the Chamber.

Researcher claims solution to P vs NP math problem

Wednesday, August 11, 2010

Vinay Deolalikar, a mathematician who works for HP Labs, claims to have proven that P is not equal to NP. The problem is the greatest unsolved problem in theoretical computer science and is one of seven problems in which the Clay Mathematics Institute has offered million dollar prizes to the solutions.

The question of whether P equals NP essentially asks whether there exist problems which take a long time to solve but whose solutions can be checked quickly. More formally, a problem is said to be in P if there is a program for a Turing machine, an ideal theoretical computer with unbounded amounts of memory, such that running instances of the problem through the program will always answer the question in polynomial time — time always bounded by some fixed polynomial power of the length of the input. A problem is said to be in NP, if the problem can be solved in polynomial time when instead of being run on a Turing machine, it is run on a non-deterministic Turing machine, which is like a Turing machine but is able to make copies of itself to try different approaches to the problem simultaneously.

Mathematicians have long believed that P does not equal NP, and the question has many practical implications. Much of modern cryptography, such as the RSA algorithm and the Diffie-Hellman algorithm, rests on certain problems, such as factoring integers, being in NP and not in P. If it turned out that P=NP, these methods would not work but many now difficult problems would likely be easy to solve. If P does not equal NP then many natural, practical problems such as the traveling salesman problem are intrinsically difficult.

In 2000, the Clay Foundation listed the “Clay Millenium Problems,” seven mathematical problems each of which they would offer a million dollars for a correct solution. One of these problems was whether P equaled NP. Another of theseseven, the Poincaré conjecture, was solved in 2002 by Grigori Perelman who first made headlines for solving the problem and then made them again months later for refusing to take the prize money.

On August 7, mathematician Greg Baker noted on his blog that he had seen a draft of a claimed proof by Deolalikar although among experts a draft had apparently been circulating for a few days. Deolalikar’s proof works by connecting certain ideas in computer science and finite model theory to ideas in statistical mechanics. The proof works by showing that if certain problems known to be in NP were also in P then those problems would have impossible statistical properties. Computer scientists and mathematicians have expressed a variety of opinions about Deolalikar’s proof, ranging from guarded optimism to near certainty that the proof is incorrect. Scott Aaronson of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has expressed his pessimism by stating that he will give $200,000 of his own money to Deolalikar if the proof turns out to be valid. Others have raised specific technical issues with the proof but noted that the proof attempt presented interesting new techniques that might be relevant to computer science whether or not the proof turns out to be correct. Richard Lipton, a professor of computer science at Georgia Tech, has said that “the author certainly shows awareness of the relevant obstacles and command of literature supporting his arguments.” Lipton has listed four central objections to the proof, none of which are necessarily fatal but may require more work to address. On August 11, 2010, Lipton reported that consensus of the reviewers was best summarized by mathematician Terence Tao, who expressed the view that Deolalikar’s paper probably did not give a proof that P!=NP even after major changes, unless substantial new ideas are added.

Organic Face Creams With Cynergy Tk And Nano Lipobelle H Eq10

By Dr. Valerie Rosenbaum

A high quality organic face cream seems to be what is on the minds of many people nowadays. They are hoping to find that antioxidant face cream organic ingredients will give them the healthy results that they have been looking for. Good luck finding one though.

Finding a high quality organic face cream can be much like looking for a needle in a haystack. The department stores rarely carry anything of the kind of quality that you are looking for in an all natural cream. Mostly what you will find in these stores will do you more harm than good.

In order to be effective your antioxidant face cream with organic ingredients should all be healthy for you to use. This is not often the case as far as the products that you will typically find on department store or pharmacy shelves. The majority of them are loaded with harmful chemical agents.

The major companies seem to believe that all that they have to do is put one or two natural ingredients into their organic face cream, and then they can fill out the rest of the product using whatever they want. Many of the chemicals that are regularly used can cause you great physical harm over time.

An antioxidant face cream with organic content should actually be something that you can use. Collagen is a naturally occurring substance, but it is not absorbable through the skin, so it is simply a wasted ingredient in any form of topical cream. The sources that they derive the collagen from make it incompatible with our own collagen.

An organic face cream should be composed of mainly vegetable or plant based ingredients. These oils are the closest in physical properties to the skin’s own natural oil making them more easily absorbable by your skin than any of the petroleum based moisturizers so commonly used today.

The best antioxidant face cream organic ingredients are without a doubt contained in Cynergy TK with Nano-Lipobelle H-EQ10. This is a mixture of nano emulsified CoenzymeQ10 and Natural vitamin E that is specially blended in order to maximize penetration. Cynergy TK uses just a single antioxidant molecule to wipe out millions of free radicals.

Cynergy TK is one of the features of an organic face cream line that was created by a company hailing out of New Zealand. They have created this formula for their anti aging skin care program, and have been receiving rave reviews for their products ability to stimulate the re-growth of collagen and elastin.

Their antioxidant face cream organic features only the finest natural ingredients such as active New Zealand Manuka honey, Phytessence Wakame Japanese brown sea kelp extract, Babassu palm oil, Maracuja passion fruit extract, and many more natural oils and waxes.

Their organic face cream is being touted as the absolute best anti aging cream available on today’s market. Their products can only be ordered directly through them, so you will not see these fine creams and lotions in stores. Try their products today if you want products that are as effective as they are safe.

About the Author: Dr. Valerie Rosenbaum is a dermatologist who specializes in natural skin care products using only clinically proven ingredients like Nano Lipobelle H-EQ10 and Cynergy TK.
