2,000 face redundancy at English steelworks

Saturday, May 9, 2009

Corus Group, the world’s fifth largest steel producer, announced on Friday that it may be forced to mothball its steelworks in Redcar, England. This move would threaten the jobs of the works’ 1,920 employees.

Corus may be forced to close its Teesside operations as a consortium has refused to honour a 10-year contract with Corus’ Teesside Cast Products, which accounted for 78% of the plant’s operations. Corus’ chief executive, Kirby Adams, said he was “extremely disappointed that the consortium members have seen fit to take this irresponsible action.”

Lord Mandelson, Secretary of State for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform, said “it is essential that Corus does everything it can legally, and with the government’s assistance, to reinstate the agreement”. Gordon Brown, the British Prime Minister, shared this view saying, “We are doing everything in our power to ensure that the contract is upheld.” Mandelson also said “we are not prepared to reconcile ourselves to the inevitable closure of this plant”.

The leader of Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council, Councillor George Dunning, said “Today is like being hit by a mini earthquake compared to what’s happened in the past.”

Martin Callanan and Stephen Hughes, Tory, and Labour MEPs for North East England, supported the idea that the government should subsidise wages in the plant on a temporary basis. Hughes and Fiona Hall, Lib Dem MEP, suggested that the government should apply to the EU’s Globalisation Adjustment Fund. Hall said “if the worst comes to the worst and jobs are indeed lost, I trust the Government will change its mind and support an application to the European Globalisation Fund in order to fund skills training for those who have lost their jobs.”

This move could “bring to an end a fine heritage of steelmaking at Teesside”, according to Adams. Steelworks in Teesside, which previously belonged to British Steel and Dorman Long, produced steel for famous structures like the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Corus had said it was likely there would be a “very significant number of redundancies” and a 90-day consultation period is due to begin.

Corus’ owner, Tata Steel, are also facing difficulties with another UK operation, automobile company Jaguar Land Rover.

Iranian International Master Dorsa Derakhshani discusses her chess career with Wikinews

Tuesday, April 14, 2020

In February 2017, the Iranian Chess Federation announced two teenage chess players, Dorsa Derakhshani and her younger brother Borna Derakhshani, were banned from representing the national team. The federation announced their decision although Dorsa Derakhshani had previously decided and informed the chess federation she did not wish to play for Iran.

Dorsa Derakhshani is currently 21 years old and holds the International Master (IM) as well as Woman Grand Master (WGM) titles. Her brother, Borna, plays for the English Federation and holds the FIDE Master title.

Dorsa Derakhshani was banned since she did not wear a hijab, an Islamic headscarf, while competing at the Tradewise Gibraltar Chess Festival in January 2017. Under the laws of Islamic Republic of Iran, hijab is a mandatory dress code. Her brother Borna Deraskhsani was banned for playing against Israeli Grand Master (GM) Alexander Huzman at the same tournament. Iran does not recognise the existence of Israel, and previously, Irani athletes have avoided playing against Israeli athletes.

Mehrdad Pahlavanzadeh, the president of the country’s chess federation, explained the decision to ban the players saying, “As a first step, these two will be denied entry to all tournaments taking place in Iran and in the name of Iran, they will no longer be allowed the opportunity to be present on the national team.” ((fa))Farsi language: ?????? ????? ?? ??? ??? ?? ??? ????? ?? ?? ???? ???????? ?? ?? ????? ? ?? ??? ????? ?????? ??????? ????? ??????? ? ???? ???? ???? ?? ??? ??? ?? ??????? ????. He further stated, “Unfortunately, something that should not have happened has happened and our national interest is paramount and we have reported this position to the Ministry of Sports.” ((fa))Farsi language: ????????? ?????? ?? ????? ????????? ?????? ??? ? ????? ??? ?? ?? ?? ???? ?????? ???? ? ?? ??? ???? ?? ?? ????? ???? ?? ????? ?????.

IM Dorsa Derakhshani, who currently studies at Saint Louis University in the United States and plays for the United States Chess Federation, discussed her chess career, time in Iran and the 2017 controversy, and her life in Saint Louis with a Wikinews correspondent.

How To Build Your Own Barbecue

Submitted by: Scott Morris

Building Your Own Barbeque

Most people really like Gas Barbecues.

Staying outdoors in the fine weather, cooking food over a flames, discussing the day with family and friends – what s not to adore?

And the good news is, it requires just a few hours to construct yourself a excellent Charcoal Barbecue that could be fired up every year, providing you with a center point for the entertaining.

Visiting a Do-it-yourself Store offers you all of the items you re going to need.

Put aside a day (or perhaps two if you need to level a bit of your garden), and get to work.

When you re stoking up the hot coals and the burgers are on the grill, the work will certainly all seem beneficial!

What You ll Require

Bricks, sand, cement

Bbq grill set

Spirit level

Shovel and trowel

Plank of wood

Masking Tape

Best places to Site Your Barbecue

Look for a flat location away from your house, outbuildings, trees, or other structures.

Bbq smoke will drift in through open windows so attempt to position it so this won t be considered a problem.

Don t forget your neighbors – they could never value your Gas Barbecue smoke billowing over their fencing and so evaluate the blowing wind and also which position might be best in order to minimize this.

Construct on a Flat Surface

The simplest way to make certain of a flat surface is always to construct your bbq on a previously level courtyard or back yard location.

If you wish to site it on lawn, you ll have to dig it out, fill it with stones and then cover the hole with paving or concrete.

Make use of your spirit level to make sure it is completely level.

When it isn t, use a layer of your concrete in order to even it out.

How big a Barbeque?

The size of your Gas Barbeque will really rely on how big the barbeque grill you select.

When you ve purchased your barbeque grill, set it on the flat location you re going to site the actual Gas Barbecue on.

Place a single layer of the bricks around the grill – setting up a U-shape around three edges and leaving the front clear.

Mark the outside as well as the inside edge of the stones with masking tape.

This will be your guideline when laying the actual bricks and mortar.

Remove the layer of stones and put them back with the rest.

Getting going

Mix the sand and cement according to the manufacturer s instructions.

Spread evenly the first volume of mortar on the ground using the masking tape as your guideline.

Position the bricks on the mortar, leaving inch gap in between each brick for additional mortar.

Check the level once again and ensure that the corners are at right angles.

The Height of the Bbq

Since you re the one who s likely to be doing the actual barbecuing, use your height in order to evaluate how high the actual Gas Barbeque ought to be.

Plan for the grill/grate supports to generally be about waist height – that ll help you save bending an excessive amount as you barbecue.

Layer the Bricks

Place the bricks, beginning with the corners.

Stagger the second layer – this can be achieved through cutting and using half bricks at the ends and full stones in the centre.

Once you ve done four or five courses of stones – staggered each time lay a length of wood across from one section to the other and use spirit level to check they are still level to each other.

Then use the spirit level vertically to check that the sides are upright.

Any difference in height ought to be leveled out using mortar.

Continue adding the stones and mortar until you ve done six or seven courses or near your waist height.

On the left-hand and right-hand sides of the wall structure as you face the bbq, move the bricks sideways so that they create a support for the charcoal holder, jutting out from the remaining wall.

Measure the width of your grill again to make certain that it s going to fit.

lay another three courses and turn the bricks sideways again – this time so that they will support the grill tray.

Include two more layers of bricks and mortar and you re done!

Finishing Touches

Go around the walls of the bbq, removing the rugged mortar edges.

This can be done as you go along using a short length of hosepipe and dragging it along each of the horizontal and vertical joints.

If you have the space, bricks and inclination, you could extend the brickwork out over the left or right of your barbecue to produce a table top, using a paving slab as the work surface.

After you ve constructed your bbq, dust off any brick dirt with a soft bristled brush or paintbrush.

Do this carefully and thoroughly

You ll need to leave the bbq not less than three days just before using it as the mortar needs this amount of time to set and dry.

Once you ve anxiously waited three days, you re ready to go, so telephone your friends and family, go to the supermarket and prepare to savor the fantastic outside with your newly built barbecue.

Bon appetite!

Cuban funds tied to Lula campaign, Brazilian magazine alleges

Sunday, October 30, 2005

Brazil —Former advisors to Brazilian Minister of Finance Antonio Palocci have claimed that three million US dollars from Cuba were used in the 2002 political campaign of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The accusation was printed by the Brazilian magazine Veja in its issue circulating this week.

According to Veja, Rogério Buratti, Palocci’s secretary in the early 1990s during the period when Palocci was mayor, claims that Ralf Barquete (another advisor to Palocci) had asked him to find a way to bring money from Cuba.

Another source, economist Vladmir Poleto who had also worked for Palocci, claimed to have brought the three million from Brasília to Campinas by plane. He stated the money was hidden in whiskey boxes: Johnnie Walker Red Label and Black Label and Havana Club (a Cuban brand of rum). Barquete received the money at the Campinas airport Viracopos. Afterwards he claims the money was transferred by car to São Paulo and delivered to Workers’ Party treasurer Delubio Soares.

Workers’ Party President Ricardo Berzoini has responded saying that the accusation is false. And Lula’s aide Gilberto Carvalho has said the story is “absurd”.

According to the blog of Folha de S. Paulo reporter Josias de Souza, Palocci and Lula are worried about the interviews being aired on Brazilian television.

The president of the PPS, federal deputy Roberto Freire (Pernambucostate), has stated that his party will ask the Electoral Justice investigatory agency and the Public Ministry to begin a investigation into the charge. The parties PFL and PSDB are also considering demanding an investigation.

Satirist Stephen Colbert runs for U.S. President

Wednesday, October 17, 2007

The American satirist Stephen Colbert has announced that he will run for the Presidency of the United States. He made his announcement on his mock news show The Colbert Report.

However, Colbert said that he would only run in his home state of South Carolina as a favorite son. He also said that he would represent both major political parties: the Republicans and the Democrats. It is not known how far Colbert will go with his character during his electoral run.

Colbert has hosted The Colbert Report, a spin-off to another satirical television series, The Daily Show, since its creation in 2005. “I didn’t have a job back then. I wonder what it was like to have a job back then. I am sure I could ask a dentist or a surgeon. He would know.” On the show he plays a right-wing political pundit, based on real-life pundits such as Bill O’Reilly and Stone Phillips. Colbert has been credited with popularizing certain words such as “Truthiness”, meaning to believe something intuitively, without regard for actual facts, logic or evidence.

Filling in for New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd on Sunday, Colbert wrote: “I am not ready to announce yet — even though it’s clear that the voters are desperate for a white, male, middle-aged, Jesus-trumpeting alternative.”

Power outage affects many areas of Chile

Monday, March 15, 2010

Pichilemu, Chile — A power outage affected many areas of Chile this evening. It is presumed to have been caused by a fault in the Chilean Sistema Interconectado Central (Central Interconnected System). Power was cut off between the Antofagasta Region and Los Lagos Region, including cities like Santiago, Valparaíso, La Serena, Pichilemu and Talca, at 20:50 (23:50 UTC). After twenty minutes, power was restored in some parts of Providencia.

It surprised the people that were in shopping centers and in massive events, like the game between Deportes La Serena and Audax Italiano, which was cancelled, and the solidarity concert “Rock por Chile” (“Rock for Chile”) that was being performed in Santiago’s Movistar Arena. The outage also interrupted the Chilean Subway; personnel are currently evacuating users.

The communications manager of Chilectra, the Chilean main power provider, reported to TVN that the power is coming back slowly to the Metropolitan Region. “We don’t know exactly what happened. We are not receiving power in the distribution network in Santiago. The power is coming back, but is probable that in the outlying areas will be more difficult. […] After the earthquake we did the corresponding fixes, so we don’t know if this is related to the earthquake directly,” Larraín said.

The Presidency General Clerk Minister, Cristián Larroulet said, as reported by El Mercurio, that the power was going to be restored in around three hours. “Effectively there’s an outage from Taltal until Los Lagos, probably because of the debility of the lines because of the earthquakes […] It is another consequence of the earthquake that affected our country,” he added.

[…] It is another consequence of the earthquake that affected our country.

The Interior Minister, Rodrigo Hinzpeter, as reported by El Mercurio at 22:20 local time (01:20 UTC), informed from the ONEMI that the outage that affected many areas of Chile was produced by a failure in a 500 kilowatts transformer from Charrúa-Temuco, that caused a major fault in the Central Interconnected System.

According to Clemente Pérez, Santiago’s Metro chief executive, Santiago’s subway was going to work normally today if the power service remains stable. The Central Interconnected System chief executive, Eduardo Ricke Muñoz, estimated at 22:44 local time (01:44 UTC) that the power service was going to be rerun in all the affected areas in the following two hours. It was later reported by El Mercurio that the failed transformer was located near Los Ángeles, in the Bío Bío Region.

At 23:54 local time (02:54 UTC), Rodrigo Hinzpeter said: “We still cannot rerun the power service in the Bío Bío region, but we are doing our best and we hope to restablish it in the next few hours”.

At 00:30 local time (03:30 UTC), ONEMI reported that the power was restored in an 88 per cent. They detailed by region:

At 01:28 local time (04:28 UTC), Rodrigo Hinzpeter, the Interior Minister, informed via his Twitter account (@rhinzpeter), that the 93% of the power supply was rerun. The State Clerk also warranted that in Concepción, the power was restored in a 40%.

Later, ONEMI ratified the information that Hinzpeter provided, and detailed the power recovering region by region, and the regions that have changed their percentage are:

 • The Coquimbo Region, the power was restored in a 98%.
 • In the Bío Bío Region, the power has been restored in a 40%. San Pedro de La Paz, Coronel, Lota, Tomé and Penco have the power rerun. Arauco, Lebu and Talcahuano still don’t have power.
 • The Los Lagos Region, has the power restored completely.

Why Install A Home Security Systems

By Adrianna Noton

Your family is the most important thing in the world. Today you can never be safe enough when it comes to protecting the people you love and your home and all of your investments. Due to the increase of people who are deciding to install home security systems, people who may actually pose a threat are beginning to refrain from breaking in to people’s homes.

By installing a home security system you can reap many benefits beyond simply protecting your material assets. First of all, a home security system will greatly increase your peace of mind when you are on vacation or away from the home. There is no need for you to stress about whether or not your home is vulnerable to potential robbers when you are meant to be relaxing on vacation. That ease of mind alone is worth all the money in the world. Also, when you are at work or away from your home every day, you should not be worrying about whether or not your home is safe.

Not only will installing a home security system keep your property and belongings safe when you are away from your home, but often people have to leave pets by themselves during the day. A home security system will keep your pets safe as well.

Many elderly people who are living on their own feel increasingly safe once they have a security system installed. An entire system is completely worth the money knowing that you can greatly decrease the anxiety experienced by one of your elderly loved ones. People deserve to feel safe at all times, and the last thing that an elderly citizen needs to feel is threatened at any moment of time.

A home security system is valuable not only for when you are away from the home, but from when you are in the home as well. When people do decide to enter into the homes’ of others, it generally occurs at nighttime. A home alarm system can be on alert while you and your loved ones sleep with complete peace of mind. Your family deserves to feel safe and protected no matter where you live. Sometimes people feel that their neighborhoods are completely safe and therefore a home security system is a waste of money. But even in safe neighborhoods, people have been known to break into the homes of others. In fact, sometimes neighborhoods that are generally safer are directly targeted due to the fact that robbers know that a break-in is not expected.

Sometimes, homeowners will set off their alarms entirely by accident. The most highly advanced home alarm systems will phone the homeowner and ask whoever answers the phone a predetermined question. As only the homeowner and the other occupants will know the answer, the alarm will stop once the answer is provided. If the person who picks up the phone cannot answer the question, police will be immediately sent to the home. This is to ensure the ultimate safety of you and your family. Home security systems provide great sense of safety for all homeowners.

Looted, possibly contaminated body parts transplanted into USA, Canadian patients

Monday, March 20, 2006

Fears of contaminated bone and skin grafts are being felt by unsuspecting patients following the revelation that funeral homes may have been looting corpses.

Janet Evans of Marion, Ohio was told by her surgeon, “The bone grafts you got might have been contaminated”. She reacted with shock, “I was flabbergasted because I didn’t even know what he was talking about. I didn’t know I got a bone graft until I got this call. I just thought they put in screws and rods.”

The body of Alistair Cooke, the former host of Masterpiece Theatre, was supposedly looted along with more than 1,000 others, according to two law enforcement officials close to the case. The tissue taken was typically skin, bone and tendon, which was then sold for use in procedures such as dental implants and hip replacements. According to authorities, millions of dollars were made by selling the body parts to companies for use in operations done at hospitals and clinics in the United States and Canada.

A New Jersey company, Biomedical Tissue Services, has reportedly been taking body parts from funeral homes across Brooklyn, New York. According to ABC News, they set up rooms like a “surgical suite.” After they took the bones, they replaced them with PVC pipe. This was purportedly done by stealth, without approval of the deceased person or the next of kin. 1,077 bodies were involved, say prosecutors.

Investagators say a former dentist, Michael Mastromarino, is behind the operation. Biomedical was considered one of the “hottest procurement companies in the country,” raking in close to $5 million. Eventually, people became worried: “Can the donors be trusted?” A tissue processing company called LifeCell answered no, and issued a recall on all their tissue.

Cooke’s daughter, Susan Cooke Kittredge, said, “To know his bones were sold was one thing, but to see him standing truncated before me is another entirely.” Now thousands of people around the country are receiving letters warning that they should be tested for infectious diseases like HIV or hepatitis. On February 23, the Brooklyn District Attorney indicted Mastromarino and three others. They are charged with 122 felony counts, including forgery and bodysnatching.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un oversees hypersonic missile test

Friday, January 14, 2022

On January 12, North Korean state-run newspaper Rodong Sinmun reported a Tuesday hypersonic missile launch attended by leader Kim Jong-un and high-ranking politicians Jo Yong Won and Kim Yo-jong. This was the third missile North Korea (DPRK) launched this year. It flew for 1,000 kilometers (621 mi) before hitting sea, state media claimed.

“The Juche weapon representing the power of the DPRK” and of “superior maneuverability” was test-fired for “final verification of overall technical specifications”, according to state media. In an email sent to Al Jazeera, professor Leif-Eric Easley at Ewha University in Seoul, South Korea said “[the] so-called hypersonic weapon is not technologically ready”. South Korean military authorities at first downplayed the missile, but later said it showed “improvement”, the Yonhap News Agency reported.

Earlier this year, North Korea conducted two missile tests: one last Wednesday, and a second one on Monday, which were confirmed by both South Korea and the Japanese coast guard. The first launch was a winter resilience test, state media claimed. North Korea tested their first hypersonic missile, Hwasong-8, on September 28. Ankit Panda, a defence expert from Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, said last Wednesday’s missile was not a Hwasong-8, but a new model unveiled at an October weapons exhibition in Pyongyang, North Korea. After the September test, Panda called Hwasong-8 a “significant milestone” in comments to the BBC.

On Monday, the United Nations (UN) missions of Albania, France, the Republic of Ireland, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States jointly called for dialogue and denounced the first test. The US ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield called it “a significant threat to regional stability”. On Tuesday, South Korean president Moon Jae-in said the tests worry him ahead of the country’s coming presidential election scheduled for March.

Hypersonic missiles are faster and can evade radar detection longer than regular ballistic missiles, the BBC explained.
